Hulki Uz at the PAI Conference On May 21st, 2014, UNFPA Representative, Dr. M. Hulki Uz, was a key note speaker at the Population Association of Iran (PAI)’s 7th National Conference. This year, the theme was “Demographic Dimensions of Change in Family Structure in Iran,” and the conference provided a key opportunity to inform policy makers on the future of families in the I.R. Iran. Other key speakers included Dr. Mohammad Mirzaie, Head of PAI, and Dr. Younes Nourbakhsh Dean of Social Science Faculty at the University of Tehran.

Firstly, Dr. Nourbakhsh touched on the reasons why the population was ageing, which includes better health. In his presentation, Dr. Uz highlighted the importance of the family institution and provided estimates of I.R. Iran’s future population at a constant total fertility rate (TFR) – which is currently 1.8. If the TFR remained at 1.8, he said, Iran would have a population of 84 million in 2020, 91 million in 2030, and 100 million in 2050. “We agree with the government that it is important to engage in thorough discussions on the issue of population policy, and we are sure that Iran will be able to set an example for other countries in this regard.” he said.

A panel discussion took place later in the day, in which the changing family structure was discussed by various academic experts from a demographic, social and economic point of view. Facilitated by Professor Mohammad Jalal Abbasi-Shavazi of Tehran University, the discussion touched upon the value changes of Iranian households, and the economic issues facing families, such as inflation and unemployment. The Vice President for Women’s and Family Affairs, Mrs. Shahindokht Molaverdi, also took part in the panel, and spoke about the changing family structures in Iran, and the growing role of women in society.
