Tehran, 24 April 2018 – In a one day expert meeting on “The Role of Energy Optimization in Sustainable Development” organized by Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture (ICCIMA), UNICEF Iran Representative, Dr Will Parks, delivered a speech and underlined the importance of children’s access to sustainable energy which can define their wellbeing and health.
“Sustainable energy solutions now play an increasingly important role in meeting the global, national and local energy needs. Interest and investments in sustainable energy are accelerating around the world. However, more attention needs to be given to the sustainable energy needs of children which can improve their health, education, well-being and development” said Dr Parks.
UNICEF’s Representative also talked about the sustainable energy issues, opportunities and barriers that children are facing around the world and provided some possible ways forward to address those issues, adding: “Studies in several countries confirm the significance of social and behavioural barriers in the use of new sustainable energy technologies. There is often a lack of knowledge of cleaner energy technologies and limited knowledge of the negative impacts of using traditional sources of energy which adversely affects children’s lives.” Additionally, he emphasized on the role of inclusive decision-making for removing the barriers preventing children’s access to sustainable energy to achieve maximum results for them.
Vice president of Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, Dr Pedram Soltani, who attended the opening session was amongst the key speakers of the meeting. Dr Soltani said: “Public access to energy and its services is the priority in the field of energy for us. Today, fortunately Iran is in a position where 100% of the cities have electricity and about 90% of them have access to gas pipes. So, from this perspective, we have fully achieved one of our goals; but in the area of renewable and clean energy we are not in a good situation.” Dr Soltani mentioned that currently there is a strong tendency towards investments in the field of renewable energy and with effective planning in this sector, we will see the growth of renewable energy production in the country.
Several sustainable energy researchers, university scholars, energy experts, authorities and private sector affiliates attended the meeting. At the end of the meeting, a statement including all the suggestions and practical solutions proposed by the speakers for optimizing energy consumption and improving its productivity was made. This statement will be published on the website of Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture.
